From our viewpoint, it may seem that Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson gave up on their two-year marriage pretty quickly. But that's not necessarily the case. According to an insider, the couple (particularly Reynolds) made a solid effort to make things work when the distance between them became an issue.
"At first it was ... let's fix this," the source told People.com. "And then it got to the point where it was just, if it's not working, it's not working. He's an adult, and he finally just said they should stop."
As we previously reported, the age difference between the 26-year-old Johansson and her husband, 34, seemed to be a big factor in the demise of their union. "She's young, and that played into how she's able to deal with things," the source says.
Despite rumors that problems for the twosome escalated when Reynolds hit it off with his new costar Blake Lively, the insider says that's just not the case. "They worked together and got along really well, but there's not more to it."
As for who is going to take the first step in filing for divorce, Reynolds is reportedly waiting for his wife to make a move.
"They're doing it this way because there's no drama, there's no cheating, there's no nothing. These are just two people who love each other who are not going to be together anymore," the source said, admitting that both parties are taking the breakup hard. "Ultimately, this is the best thing to keep both of them happy and healthy in the long run. But yeah, he's sad. They both are."
