With the popularity of Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, music artists don't even have to appear on TV or the radio to become famous anymore. And now MTV has created its own awards show to recognize stars who've become viral presences on the Internet.
The first-ever MTV 'O' Music Awards will take place on April 28 across MTV.com, VH1.com and several social media sites. The awards will honor artists who've taken over the Web in categories such as "The Best Fan Cover Award" and "Most Followed on Twitter."
"This is an exciting music event that's by and for the fans. We're not sure what’s going to happen, but we know that it's going to be fun and true to all the innovations happening in digital," Shannon Connolly, vice president of music strategy for the MTV Music Group, says in a statement. "(It'll be a) convergence of programmers, hackers, artists, web celebrities, and all of the people that are contributing to this real renaissance of music and creativity that we’re going through."
Lady Gaga scored three nominations, including "Innovative Artist" and "Must-Follow Artist on Twitter." Twitter favorite Kanye West is also up for those two categories, as well as "Best Tweet." And 10-year-old Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" dance landed in the "Most Viral Dance" category. Click here to see the entire list of categories and nominees.
With her recent surge in popularity, we were hoping controversial YouTube sensation Rebecca Black would have found her way into the awards, but it seems the "Friday" singer got snubbed. Maybe next year!
Voting for the awards begins April 5 at OMusicAwards.com.
